D and D Dairies “ Grass Roots”

“To business that we love we rise betime, and go to ‘t with delight,” said Shakespeare’s Antony.

Anyone would think he’d been a dairy farmer!

… life on a ‘dairy’ basis

D and D Dairies isn’t simply a business for the two families nor is simply working there simply a job for its 30 employees, many of whom began working for the previous generation. D and D Dairies is a way of life. Their farming heritage stretches back many generations and looks set to continue with the younger members of these dairy dynasties.

… and where are the cows?

Crieff is a popular Highland holiday town built on a steep hill facing south over the scenic valley of the River Earn. Dargill Farm sits south west of the town hugging the river while closer to the town due south lies the land of Duchlage Farm. The dairy herds graze freely and are milked in the early morning and again in the afternoon. What is not fertile dairy grazing is beef cattle, sheep and arable, around 200 acres of which is potatoes. Much of this yield is sold in the farm shop.

… and how does their milk get to you?

D and D’s own modern refrigerated lorries currently deliver west as far as Crianlarich and Callander, east to Dundee and St. Andrews, north to House of Bruar and south to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling. Of course, it’s helpful that the partners own the town garage ensuring that the lorries are maintained in tip-top condition “in-house” and delivery schedules are never compromised.

… quality stuff you need to know

Dargill and Duchlage farms and the dairy plant are fully licensed by Perth and Kinross Council and both farms are members of the Specially Selected Scotch Farm Assurance Scheme. Both affiliations ensure the highest quality of hygiene and animal welfare and D and D Dairies are proud to have earned both their endorsements.

So, can these experienced farmers still claim that if you show them a pint of milk they’ll tell you which cow it came from? Naturally.
